Previously I freelanced full time as a web dev/designer specializing in WordPress sites, adding plugins was a huge part of that – and saved my ass a few times. Currently when you add or update a plugin, you are taken to a new page where it progressively lists the progress as it happens. One thing that used to really annoy me is that once it was completed, you had to click on activate. Which is a little silly considering when a user downloads a plugin they will want to use it straight away or pretty soon, and if it’s an update the user would already be using it and would definitely want to activate it.
According to WPTavern, in WordPress 4.2 this has been changed so that the plugin activates automatically, and updates happen within the plugin list page. This should decrease the perceived time that it takes to update and download plugins, as well as decrease the amounts of actions the user needs to take to achieve their task.
So as long as it works as expected, it should be a great improvement.
